Tips For Growing The Flowering Dogwood Tree

When it comes to picking the trees to contribute to the landscape, it is great to be able to plant flowering trees to add color at eye level and one popular choice is the flowering dogwood tree.

Dogwood trees, or the European Cornels as others would designate it, create a perfect impact to the environment. They are good choice for your landscape as their brilliant blossoms tend to last long. They are especially wonderful sight during autumn. On the average, a dogwood tree can grow from 20 to 25 feet in height. The spread of the dogwood can also reach as wide as 15 to 20 feet.

The dogwood is part of the Cornaceae family, under the Cornus genus. It is known as the provincial flower of British Columbia in Canada and the state flower of Virginia, USA.

The flowering dogwood trees generally have glossy green color. It has distinct opposite leaves, but there can be found some branches with the alternate order. All species of the dogwood bear fruits that have one or two seeds in it. On the other hand, the flowers of the dogwood have four parts. They usually come in clusters of yellow or white. They are also surrounded by greenish bracts that can be mistaken as petals.

There is a popular story for the flowering dogwood tree. It was said to be the wood used to build the cross for the crucifixion of Christ due to its towering characteristic and hardwood. The tree then won the favour of God that it was turned into a smaller tree with gnarled and twisted trunks so that it will not be used again for that dire purpose. It was also given white flowers resembling the cross. The center area of the flower is reddish and is regarded as a symbol for the blood of Jesus.

Dogwood trees are often used as ornaments. Nowadays, dogwoods can be found along water ways where they best give a natural effect to the landscape. The most favorite choice for this purpose are the species with bright yellow or red stems.

The term dogwood is actually a variation of the word ‘dagwood.’ This latter term is actually used to describe the slender stems that are characteristic of hard wood used for making daggers or skewers. This type of wood is also considered very useful in making tools, shuttles and other pieces that need strong wood.

Dogwoods also bear fruits in bright and cherry red colors. These are very much loved by the birds. Most of the fruits in the genus where dogwood belongs are edible, though they are not found very favorable because it does not contain much flavor. Some berries can only be feasted on by birds as they are toxic to humans.

Cultivating Flowering Dogwood Trees

There are certain considerations to ensure that you grow well a healthy and blooming dogwood tree in your yard. Here are some points to take note of.

1. Characteristic of the Soil

The dogwood can very well adapt to the different soil types that can provide it with basic nutrients. They can thrive in alkaline, acidic, loamy, sandy, clay or drought tolerant soils.

Problems may arise if the dogwood is not given the proper conditions needed. At the least, it is preferable to provide soils that are rich in nutrients and well-drained after sufficient water supply.

2. Enemy Pests

The Dogwood Borer is the main enemy of this flowering tree. This is most common in areas of the United States and Canada. They can cause damage by thriving in the bark of the trees to feast on its tissues.

This pest will cause the tree to grow slowly or at the worst, kill it. Make sure this pests are prevented properly.

3. Preventing Diseases

The flowering dogwood is also susceptible to the disease brought by dogwood anthracnose. The fungus Discula destructiva causes the devastation of the flowers before they can bloom.

There are many things in nature that we can enjoy. One of its clear proofs is the flowering dogwood tree. So make sure you get to enjoy it in your own garden. Bring nature closer to home.

Home Garden – Six Amazing Tips To Create A Beautiful Home Garden!

“Wow, what a beautiful garden!” How often have you expressed this view after observing the wonderful vista in front of you? Do you long to create the same magic in your own home garden so that you become the envy of your friends and neighbors? Well, here’s how:

(1) The basic mistake made by self-gardeners is not finding out correct details about the plants they purchase for their home garden. By this, I do not mean going into the botanical details about each and every shrub or tree! What I mean is inquiring about their growing habits. How tall will they be when fully grown? How far can the roots spread?

(2) People with large home gardens tend to forget that plants are also living things and grow up into tall shrubs and trees! Without a thought, they tend to put trees too close to the house or plant shrubs just under the windows. Can you imagine what will follow?

(3) Like growing children, these small shrubs and trees also grow year by year. Being too close to the house and having no place to spread, the roots of large trees may damage water as well as sewage lines by penetrating the foundation of the house. Your gardening expenses therefore go up, what with having paid for the plants themselves plus having to spend on costly repairs. The ultimate disaster is when you have to cut down the entire tree, despite having had it for so many years!

It is the same story with shrubs. Though their roots cannot destroy foundations, still the plants grow tall enough to prevent sunlight from entering the windows. You yourself will not be able to view your garden from within the house!!

(4) Timing is equally important. Yes, there is a proper season for planting young shrubs and trees in your home garden – it is late fall, when the roots are able to grow strong and healthy. Summer is a definite no-no where planting of new trees is concerned!

(5) “God, I am dying of thirst!” Well, shrubs and trees are also living things which require a certain quantity of water daily for their survival. They should not be under-watered nor over-watered, especially when young. In fact, a garden which has received more than sufficient water in the spring and summer, thrives during freezing winters too; much better than plants which have received less water.

(6) Do you trim your nails when they grow too long? What about hair and beard? They also undergo regular trimming to give a neat appearance. Well, plants also tend to grow wildly unless kept under control. Fall is the season for pruning vines and shrubs. This not only ensures proper growth, but also makes sure that there is good airflow. The result is better-looking plants in springtime.

The tips mentioned above may give the feeling that it is all too much work for one person alone! I agree. Creating a home garden is indeed tough work! But remember, working with your hands goes a long way in ridding you of everyday stresses and burdens. Even therapists agree that it is a wonderful way to do both, relax as well as exercise. No more daily trips to the gym! And what a great sense of achievement at the end of it all!

For the increasing number of Americans utilizing “home gardens” as a pastime and hobby today, the visual treat produced is more than enough reward for all their efforts!

Sowing Seeds and Reaping the Harvest

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.-Galatians 6:7-9 Can anything we do be done in secret when Proverbs 15:3 says “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” Is there any thought in a man’s heart that is secret when Proverbs 21:2 says “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.” Is there any place that we can go where the Lord sees not when Proverbs 5:21 says “For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.” The answer is simply no, God sees all, knows all, and watches all even our very thoughts. “The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity-Psalm 94:11.” Why do we justify or wrongs? Why do we give up living a righteous life simply because we are tired of not experience the high pleasures of life? The word of God says God is not mocked and whatever we sow we shall reap. Many Christians will still try to justify their sin and say well Jesus died on the cross so I will just ask for forgiveness and I will be fine. This statement is both true and false. True because the wages of sin are death and Jesus has paid the price for your sins so that you will not receive the true penalty which is death. False, because God promised in his New Testament after the death of Jesus that he will not be mocked and if a man sows into the flesh he shall reap corruption. The mercy of God will keep us from extreme punishment but a harvest of corruption is coming. After all if we truly are children of the Lord and the Lord loves us indeed then these scriptures must be true For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.-Hebrews 12:6, As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”-Revelation 3:19, and “But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.-1 Corinthians 11:32.”

It is true that the Lord does chastise or as Grandma said spank his children. The question is how much corruption have we placed upon ourselves? How many seeds have we sown in sin and when the harvest comes to past how much do we loathe and cry? I understand in my own personal walk with Christ I had a period of time when nothing seem to go right and after carefully examining my behavior I understood that I had planted some bad seeds and corruption was the harvest I reaped. This word by Paul gives us serious warning to live by and I pray that we are careful about the choices we make and how we sow because it could mean problems for us in the future. Every problem in our life is not related to our own doing some things we must endure for the name of Christ sake. The word of God tells us that we should not grow weary in well doing for in due time we shall reap that harvest. We must not give up sowing seeds into the spirit simply because we don’t see the results. Farmers will continue working on a field cultivating and watering until harvest time comes. It takes patience but the harvest will be great. Heaven is the ultimate harvest but God also has away of blessing us here on earth. Our ultimate goal is to plant seeds that will reap unto us heavenly benefits just as Jesus Christ foretold to us in Matthew 6:19-21 “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”There is a reward in heaven and I encourage my self and others to sow spiritual seeds and reap the everlasting life. The way of the flesh is not justified by God and our sins are not inexcusable simply because we say they are.

It is a sad thing in the life of a believer to be in a season where the chickens come home to roost and corruption is running wild in their life. 1 Corinthians 1:29 “That no flesh should glory in his presence.” God is gracious and just to forgive us, but we should stop reeking havoc in our own lives and decide to sow into something more profitable for us which is the spirit. Remember sin is a choice that we all make and we all sin but let’s do a better job at abstaining by much prayer and time with God. “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”-Galatians 5:16-25

The Hercules Garden Water Fountain at Kew Gardens

One of the most beloved landmarks in England’s Kew Gardens is the Hercules garden water fountain at The Palm House Pond (as it’s properly known, although tourists are allowed to call it just “Palm Pond” or “Hercules Pond”).  Although originally built to add beauty and humidity to the next door’s tropical greenhouse (The Palm House), it seemed to the designers that something seemed to be missing from the outdoor garden water fountain.  It was a statue.

Say Hello To Hercules

Most of Kew Gardens was built and designed in the 1800’s, when the art of the Greeks and Romans was especially revered.  It was the only thing thought to be grand enough to place in an English garden water fountain.  The pond was built in 1845, the same time construction was going on at The Palm House.

The sculpture of Hercules wasn’t added until 1853.  He is naked in the Greek tradition and wresting with a large, angry serpent (the Greek God Achelus) on top of a large square base (called a plinth).  The whole thing is over six feet high.  Properly, the statue in the garden water fountain is called “Hercules Fighting Achelus”, but it usually just known as “Herc”.

Francis Joseph Bosio

The sculptor who won the job at placing a heroic image in one of the most visited garden water fountains in the country was Francis Joseph Bosio (1768 – 1845), also known as Baron Francois Joseph Bosio.  He was French, which somehow seem puzzling for England’s premier garden water fountain.  But then again, the subject matter of the sculpture was Greek.  England has always had a bit of an identity crisis.

Bosiso was heavily influenced by Greek and Roman art and most of his surviving works are all in the style and subject matter of Greek and Roman myths.  Mostly these were of large nude people and horses. Other sculptures resting in museums around the world include “Hyacinth Awaiting His Turn To Throw The Discus” in The Art Institute of Chicago and “Cupid with a Bow” in St. Petersberg.

However, Bosio is best known for the statues of angels and horses on top of the Arc de Trioumphe du Carrosel.  How he exactly won the commission for the Hercules statue in The Palm House Pond’s garden water fountain is not known, but in 1824 Bosio won renown for another Hercules and snake statue called “Hercules and the Lernaen Hydra”.  Besides his work, not much is known about Bosio.
